Perfume Testing - A Quick Guide

If you're a perfume lover like me, chances are that a trip to your local high street perfume shop is like letting a child loose in a sweet shop. I just can't resist the urge touch every bottle and spritz perfume on every available patch of skin, even my husband's if he's unlucky enough to be with me at the time. As much fun as this can be, if you're actually looking for that next signature scent for yourself then this is not exactly the best way to go about testing perfume and here's why.

You see the human nose is a funny old thing. The more you bombard it with different smells, the more difficult it becomes to differentiate between those smells, something which is obviously pretty important when choosing a fragrance. The general rule seems to be that you shouldn't test more than three fragrances at a time. I personally would go so far as to say you shouldn't actually test more than two on your skin at any one time.

But before you even try a perfume on your skin you should try blotter tests first - you know, the little strips of paper that you see in your perfume shop. Blotter testing allows you to get an initial impression of a fragrance. Some fragrances you may immediately dislike and so there's no real point in testing those on your skin. Others you may not dislike but you may be a little uncertain about them. Don't ignore those completely - remember that fragrances change when they come into contact with your particular skin chemistry and they also change the longer you wear them. And like most things, when testing, take your time with these blotter tests. Smell one or two perfumes and then give your nose a minute or two to settle before trying more.

Once you have a selection of blotters that you like, try to choose the two or three that stood out the most for you. Now you're ready for some actual skin testing. In an ideal world, your friendly perfume sales assistant will be able to provide you with sample vials of your selected fragrances so that you can take these home and test them at your leisure. More often than not there won't be any samples in which case you will have to spritz or dab some in the shop. I would suggest applying a little of each perfume to the inside of each wrist or 'pulse point'.

The key here is to give it time. As I've mentioned previously, fragrances change when they react to your body chemistry and the longer they are exposed to air, releasing first the top notes then, after ten or twenty minutes the heart or middle notes (the dominant character of the fragrance) followed by the base. This is when you start to get a better sense of what this fragrance is really like and what it would be like to wear throughout the day. You'll be amazed at how different some fragrances can seem from top notes to base. In fact I can't count the number of times I've smelt a particular perfume and been disappointed by its initial impressions only to love it as it has settled. As you will no doubt have realised by now, this is why you can really test and fully appreciate a perfume by a quick little smell in a perfume shop.

Hopefully out of this process you will have found yourself a wonderful new signature perfume. If not, well there are so many fragrances to choose from, you'll just have to keep on testing. After all, that's part of the fun isn't it?

Secrets of Perfume Ingredients

While today's favorite fragrances come to you from a manufacturing plant, ancient perfumers used natural ingredients and traditional methods to make fragrant products. Since many of these original ingredients were also used in ancient pharmacies, even until the 18th century, perfume was widely regarded as an antiseptic and even medicine as much as a cosmetic.

Mentioned in the Bible and other ancient texts, frankincense and myrrh were substances so valuable they rivaled even gold. Frankincense is a resin from a gum tree that is produced in shapes called "tears" when the bark of the scraggly Boswallia tree is disturbed. These trees are rare and grow mainly in arid Middle Eastern lands and require hand-harvesting, contributing to their exorbitant price.

Today, a fragrant product that uses frankincense is Love Butter by Carol's Daughter.

Myrrh, called a "bitter perfume" in the Christmas Carol "We Three Kings of Orient Are," is also used today. Myrrh is a gum resin produced from a bush-like desert plant. In Arabic, the name Myrrh means "bitter" and this burnt orange looking substance does indeed have a strong, bitter aroma. Originally used as incense, today Yves St. Laurent's Opium and Rage of the Seven Sinful Scents by Gendarme list myrrh as an ingredient.

Patchouli and sandalwood are both aromatic woods that come from Asia. Patchouli is grown in the East and West Indies while sandalwood comes from Nepal (about the farthest North it grows), India, Hawaii and Australia. While synthetics are often used today for these endangered woods, they have both been around for millennia as fragrance ingredients and have been prized for their healing properties.

The best-known patchouli scent on the market right now by far is Thierry Mugler's Angel. Mugler is a French perfumist and his unique Angel perfume is one of those love-it-or-hate-it kind of scents.

Sandalwood is used in aromatherapy and also does double-duty in the perfume world since it can serve as a fixative or anchor to other scents. Sandalwood has never really gone out of style. Today it's in lots of scents, including Dior Addict by Dior, Escada Magnetism, Hanae Mori Butterly, and the Cartier scent Delices de Cartier.

Amber has got to be one of the most surprising and unusual things that is put into perfume. People who hear that a perfume contains amber typically think of the golden resin used to make jewelry. Actually, that amber is not used in perfume making.

This amber is a short (and nicer-sounding) term for ambergris. For centuries, ambergris was harvested on the beaches. It was a gray substance that beachcombers could pick up and sell to factories that used it for a variety of products. Since it had a very distinctive aroma, it was used in perfumery. Ambergris did not smell wonderful by itself, but it blended well with other ingredients and became a staple in perfume-making even before people knew what it was.

Even today, we don't really know what ambergris is, and perhaps we don't want to know. Sometime in the 19th century, it was known that this mysterious gray substance, which unpredictably appeared on the beaches of North America and other places, was associated with sperm whales. Today, it is thought that ambergris is a substance that sperm whales regurgitate after dining on their favorite meal of squid.

Be that as it may, amber in perfume today is synthetic stuff, made to mimic the scent of the original ambergris. Amber is found in Dolce and Gabbana's Light Blue, Vera Wang Princess, and Stella by Stella McCartney, to name a few.

As much as perfume relies on ancient ingredients, including plants (lavender), spices (cinnamon, cloves), flowers (roses, gardenias, honeysuckle, lilies) and fruits (orange, lemon, peach), it also relies on new ingredients.

The biggest "new thing" in perfume is the fact that today we live in a global village. Flowers indigenous to exotic lands can be easily obtained and put into perfume. We can now take advantage of Eastern spices, South Pacific flowers, North American musk, and Indian woods. Of course, much of this happens at the lab level, meaning in the form of synthetics. This helps preserve natural resources and makes perfume quality more uniform.

Another interesting new wrinkle in the perfume world occurred in the 1920s with the advent of a chemical substance called aldehyde. Aldehyde is a synthetic odor molecule but unlike other synthetics, this wasn't a fake anything. Aldehyde was artificial and not meant to mimic anything natural. It has a distinctive "sparkly" quality to it and is often mixed with florals. Probably the best known aldehyde scent in the world is the perennial favorite, Chanel No. 5. The creator of Chanel No. 5, Ernst Breaux, also created Evening in Paris, a much more difficult scent to find, but another one that uses sparkling aldehyde notes.

Secret Formulas, Intrigue, Copycats, and Other Things at the Perfume Counter

No industry on earth is as shrouded in secrecy as the perfume world.

The world of perfume is big business, but it's a business built on preferences, noses, tastes, and the ability to protect your formulas.

There is no legal protection for a perfume formula. If I mix a bunch of ingredients and come up with a wonderful perfume, anybody who can figure out my recipe is free to market the perfume. There is actually a tiny sub-industry of chemists who are doing that very thing, trying to imitate perfumes with drug-store knockoffs labeled "Smells Like White Diamonds" or "Smells Like Eternity."

To protect formulas, perfume experts rely on one ancient and one modern technique. The ancient technique is secrecy. You could probably get the formula for Coca-Cola more easily than you could dig up the ingredients for a hot new scent. "Noses," the people who invent the scents, work in secrecy and often lead extremely low-profile lives despite the fact that they are highly sought after professionals.

Another secret of the perfume industry is a pretty "open secret." It's obvious to most perfumistas, and it ought to be obvious to people who buy perfume, even if they don't really think about it much. Here it is: The people who attach their names to the perfume are not the ones who invent it.

Coco Chanel did not concoct her legendary No. 5 in a Paris apartment; it was concocted in the 1920s by one of the world's great "noses," a Russian living in Paris by the name of Ernst Breaux. Celebrity perfumes today may be created with minimal to moderate involvement of their spokespeople, but the real creation of the scent is done by someone else. What this means is that when you buy a scent by J Lo or Beyonce or Liz Taylor or Paris Hilton, you are purchasing a product they agreed to endorse. So don't be too overawed by a celebrity on the label.

Good old-fashioned secrecy about perfume formulas still works great in the perfume industry, but that does not stop copycats from trying to steal the formulas. The modern technique to help prevent perfume piracy is making the perfumes incredibly complicated.

Way back in the 1920, the same approach was taken with perfumes like Chanel No. 5, Youth Dew, and Evening in Paris, in that they used dozens of ingredients in precise proportions. Even if you could figure out what most of the ingredients were (and Chanel No. 5 has over 100), you could spend a lifetime in the lab experimenting to get the proper balance.

Perfumes today are so extremely complex that it's hard to copy them.

There are two types of perfume copycat. The first is the legal type. These guys find a top-selling perfume and then create an imitation version. It may or may not be a good imitation, but it's at least in the ballpark. They then package their product in a plain box and advertise it as a scent that "smells like X perfume."

This is legal, but it's really not a good thing. First of all, it probably does smell vaguely like the original, but it is doubtful that a "nose" who could steal the exact recipe for a perfume would work for one of these copycat labs. You're dealing with an approximation, and that's on the best day.

Second, this kind of "smells-like" scent is marketed entirely on price; they are the bargain fragrances. This means you can expect a lot less fragrance and a lot more alcohol, smaller sized bottles, and all round cheaper development and production. Most people I know who have tried a copycat product are disappointed because it just doesn't measure up to the real thing in terms of quality.

The other kind of perfume pirate is a counterfeit producer. These guys not only create imitation perfumes, they put them in original or "forged" bottles and packaging and try to pass them off as the real thing. What they're trying to do is counterfeit an original and still be able to sell it for significantly less (price is the only drawing card for these guys).

Don't count on this stuff for purity, high production standards, or not getting you in trouble. Yes, you can get in trouble if you purchase counterfeit merchandise. Besides, these guys are stealing a legitimate product and trying to pass it off as their own. Don't get mixed up in that.

Of course, many would-be perfume lovers find the cost of their perfume habit prohibitively expensive. However, there are lots of good reasons to stick to the real deal. Perfume manufacturers put their reputation into every bottle; they tend to manufacture smooth scents, nuanced, with top-quality ingredients, carefully packaged, and delivered safely to market (particularly online). Knockoffs and counterfeits are out to make a profit on a cheaper product; these guys cut corners and not always in places you can see. From missing or substandard ingredients to weaker solutions, higher alcohol content, and dubious marketing, the knockoffs are really just out for your money and the counterfeits are thieves.

Copycat perfumes are often less "textured" and subtle than the real thing. While some people might not notice much difference, perfumistas can often take one whiff and distinguish a knockoff from the real perfume.

The real thing will also have more "depth" to it and the blending will create a scent that lasts longer on your skin. Buy perfume from reputable places, which includes major department stores, perfume stores (if you're lucky enough to have them in your area), or online websites with solid reputations or the website of the manufacturer or designer. If you have even the slightest doubts that your perfume may be counterfeit, examine the packaging. Counterfeiters often get sloppy there.

Finally, remember that perfume is a luxury and luxuries are not supposed to be two for a buck in the discount house.

Evaporation causes different ‘notes’ to come out during this period.

So what exactly are these notes? Let’s take a look.

Because this is the first scent a person smells, the manufacturer knows that the top notes are very important for a good first impression. The top notes are usually described as fresh or strong. These notes generally last a matter of minutes (10-30) due to them evaporating quickly.

Everyone has had to ask this question before. It’s one of those taboo things that guys don’t seem to want to ask; who knows why. What really gets me is that a lot of men don’t actually know how to properly apply mens cologne.

That’s right; you too may be wasting money and not getting the results you deserve from your chosen fragrance. Let’s go over the best places on your body to spray some ‘magic juice’, as well as a few other things you should know.

You have probably sprayed cologne on your clothes at one time or another hoping that the smell would last. This is exactly the opposite of what you want to do. Clothes are not a hotspot and therefore will cause the smell of the pheromone to dissipate rapidly. The best hotspots for this are the wrists, chest area, back, and thighs.

The one thing that remains constant no matter what your situation, is don’t overspray the perfume! Keep it subtle. Two to three sprays is all you need. Of course use your judgment, but too little is better than too much here. If you have ‘splash’ cologne that doesn’t spray, just put your index finger over the bottle opening, and tip the bottle. That way you won’t pour too much on.

When buying perfume and cologne, most people do not realize that they are getting RIPPED OFF! That's right, you know who you are. A lot of people buy their perfume and cologne from a large fashion retailer like JCPenny or Nordstroms. This is a BIG MISTAKE! Take some time to sit down and think about what you are buying. You are buying some liquid thats in a small dispenser device. Cologne and Perfume are very cheap to make. EDT, EDP, EDC? The Various Types Cologne And Perfume

Not all cologne and perfume is made equally. In fact there are four different concentrations of perfume, each one being very different from the other.

In this article I am going to discuss the four different variations of cologne as well as what each concentration may be used for.

Did you know that most cologne’s and perfumes are comprised mainly of alcohol? In fact, most of the fragrances that you see in any shop will only be comprised of 4-10% of actual scented compounds. Of course this varies depending on the perfume that you look at. The rest of the 86-90% of the bottle is made up of alcohol and water.

Some fragrances actually have a lower concentration of scented compounds, and some have more. This is where the commonly used EDP, EDT, and EDC come into play. Let’s take a look at what these mean.

Perfume – Also known as Perfume extract, ‘Perfume’ is the most concentrated and smoothest of the four types. Typically made up of a 20-40% concentration of scented compounds, perfume is definitely the most expensive to buy.

Eau de Parfum – EDP is typically made up of an 8-16% concentration of scented compounds. EDP is probably the most common type of concentration you will see at the store. An EDP scent will usually fade after four hours, but the base notes can linger for a 24 hour period. Fragrances with an EDP concentration are perfect if you need an all day scent

Eau de Toilette – EDT is another very common concentration found in many fragrances. EDT is typically made up of a 4-8% concentration of scented compounds. Some people find that some EDT perfumes last a long while, but generally these are better left for night time use where the scent isn’t needed for as long.

Eau de Cologne – EDC isn’t commonly found in any fragrances anymore. It doesn’t last that long, and is typically only made with a 2-4% concentration of scented compounds.
